Atelier d'art Sarreguemines Tableware
Atelier d'art Sarreguemines Tableware
Atelier d'art Sarreguemines is a manufacturer with a lot of history and French prestige.
The factory was founded around 1790 in the town of Sarreguemines (Lorraine, eastern France), near the German border. It became world-famous in the 19th century. It grew so important that it supplied a large part of the original tiles for the decoration of the Paris Metro . Due to the wars, the factory changed nationality several times. It was French, then German (1871-1918), and then French again. This explains why some old stamps say "Germany" or do not include "France."
The designation "Atelier d'art" (Art Workshop) was usually reserved for pieces with special glazes or more decorative finishes than ordinary utilitarian tableware.
